AK-47
The world-renowned AK-47 cannabis strain mixes Columbian, Mexican, Thai and Afghan roots into a powerful Sativa-dominant bud that’s name is shrouded in mystery. Some say that the strain is so powerful that it is named after the Russian machine gun. Others say that “AK” is short for Afghan Kush and the suffix “47” is from the original Dutch growers tracking system. Regardless of where the name originates, the strain is the stuff of legend. The potent yet balanced effects of the bud mixed with the ease of growth for even beginner growers makes this strain a favorite in the cannabis community. While most folks believe the strain was first bred in 1992 by Serious Seeds in the Netherlands, other folks believe that the strain dates back to the 1970s. With its earthy, slightly spicy flavor and a long-lasting cerebral buzz, AK-47 is perfect for those seeking a strain that suits both recreational and medicinal needs.

AK-47: Weapon of Choice
The AK-47 strain of cannabis, while surrounded by mystery, is well-known for its flavor and aroma as well as what it does to the user. The unique blend of effects it offers each user make it a standout strain. Even though the THC levels are moderate it delivers a strong, long-lasting cerebral buzz that is noticeably relaxing and uplifting. When smoked, AK-47 delivers a smooth, slightly sweet aftertaste. The combination of the strain’s flavor and balanced effects earned AK-47 a lasting place among the most popular cannabis strains. Speaking of the strain’s popularity it is one of the few known strains that has won awards as both a “sativa” and “indica”. Most notably the High Times Cannabis Cup. By 2020 it took home 16 awards such as Best Sativa award at the 2011 Toronto Treating Yourself Expo. With a resume like this, AK-47 is popping up in more grow rooms and gardens than ever before. Thankfully, AK-47 is easy to grow in various environments, making it a great choice for growers of all experience levels.
Growing Tips for Our Seeds
AK-47 can be grown both indoors and outdoors. While it is proven that the strain grows best in controlled environments, AK-47 has the ability to thrive outdoors in a warm, sunny climate. The climate ensures the plants have plenty of sunlight and are protected from extreme weather conditions. Luckily the strain performs well in multiple types of lighting. You don’t need the biggest and brightest or most expensive to successfully bring this strain to harvest. Just as long as you have dialed in the growing conditions you should be able to produce a healthy yield of strong, delicious buds. When fully flowered the plants feature yellow and green, almost fluorescent leaves. The buds that AK-47 produces are dense and leafy with a hint of amber and light green.
Dial in Your Growing Conditions
- Indoor or Outdoor: AK-47 grows best in temperature and humidity controlled environments.. Maintaining consistent temperature and humidity levels is absolutely key. The ideal temperature for these plants is between 68-80 degrees fahrenheit. Also, it’s important to maintain a light schedule that provides at least 18 hours of light during the vegetative stage and 12 hours during the flowering stage.
- Moisture control: The AK-47 strain, during vegetative growth, prefers a humidity level between 55-65%. As the plants transition to the flowering stage lowering the humidity to around 40-50% is important. This will help prevent mold, mildew, and bud rot.
- Training Techniques: AK-47 benefits from low-stress training or the Screen of Green method to increase yields and promote lateral growth. Both training techniques will help the plants reach their peak growth. Creating an even canopy so that light reaches every branch, leaf and bud is key to getting the desired yields and THC content of AK-47.
The Germination Game Plan
Before you even plant your AK-47 female cannabis plants, you will first need to germinate these seeds. To do so, refer to our free germination guide, knowing that they are backed by our impressive 90% germination guarantee.
Yields, Flowering Time and Harvest
- Flowering Time: With indoor grows you can expect the AK-47 strain to harvest after its flowering stage of 50-65, which is about average. Outdoor plants are usually ready to harvest by mid-to-late October. Growers should closely monitor the trichomes on the buds. When most trichomes turn from clear to a milky white with some amber mixed in, they are ready to harvest.
- Yields: Indoor yields are around 400 grams per square meter, while outdoor grows typically produce over 400 grams per plant. Both indoor and outdoor harvests are pretty healthy considering you are growing one of the best buds around.
Dominant Terpenes in AK-47: The Legendary Strain
The AK-47 terpene profile is directly responsible for how this plant smells, tastes and the strong effects it has on its users. The most dominant terpene in this strain is beta-caryophyllene while myrcene, and Delta-3 carene are the secondary terpenes.
- Beta-Caryophyllene: The Most Dominant – A spicy, peppery terpene that has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
- Myrcene: In Abundance – Known for balancing the other terpenes within the strain with earthy, clove-like notes.
- Delta-3 Carene: Pine and Cedar- Naturally occurring in pine and cedar trees this terpene is known to draw out liquids such as mucus.
Dominant Cannabinoids in AK-47:
Cannabinoids, although in the background, play an important role in AK-47 and are generally a huge part in the makeup of cannabis. That creative, happy and relaxed feeling you get when using AK-47 is due to its dominant cannabinoids. Each cannabinoid does something a little different.
- THC: The Main Character – THC is the most dominant cannabinoid on the molecular level of this strain. The crystalline compound tetrahydrocannabinol is the main ingredient of cannabis. Topping out at a respectable 19%, the THC in the Sativa-dominant hybrid is responsible for how chill you feel after partaking in this bud.
- CBD: Very Minimal Amounts – While the CBD levels in AK-47 are just about 1%. CBD still plays a role in what the strain does to the user, more on a physical level than a cerebral level. CBD is non-psychoactive and can produce effects that help with muscle soreness as well as aches and pains and can also help with insomnia.

I had a minor payment issue during the checkout process, but the support staff was incredibly patient and helped me resolve it within just minutes.

I grow a few times a year as a hobby and AK-47 from Grower’s Choice was one of my most satisfying runs. Easy enough for intermediate growers, finished in about 8 weeks of flower, and produced beautiful dense buds dripping in resin. The high is euphoric and creative — perfect for daytime use. Already ordered more.

During the peak of flowering, the main terminal colas became incredibly dense and heavy, eventually requiring a bit of extra support from my trellis netting.

I love how the AK-47 keeps its manageable height, making it the perfect candidate for a multi-layered shelving unit or a small closet grow space.

The seeds were dark, well-matured, and heavy, which is always a great indicator of high-quality stock that has been stored under the proper conditions.

Even though I am relatively new to cultivation, the resilience of these genetics made the entire grow journey feel surprisingly straightforward and stress-free for me.

Grew these outdoors in the PNW under our notoriously cloudy skies and they still performed well. Finished a bit later than expected due to lower light levels but the quality was excellent. Dense, resinous buds with classic AK aroma. Next run I’ll start earlier in the season to maximize the light window. Great genetics overall.

The genetics are clearly good but AK-47 is NOT ideal for small tents without aggressive training. I grow in a 2×2 and these plants wanted to take over — I was topping and tucking constantly. The final product was excellent but the process was stressful. If you have the space, go for it. If not, maybe choose a more compact strain.

The seeds arrived in a very secure and protective vial, which gave me confidence that the genetics remained fresh and undamaged during the long transit.

I noticed that the plants have a very high tolerance for slightly higher EC levels, allowing me to push the feeding during the mid-bloom phase.
